What is Japan's "Soft Power" That Is Attracting Global Attention?
In recent years, interest in Japanese culture has been growing around the world. The charms that Japan possesses, such as anime, manga, Japanese cuisine, and traditional culture, are attracting people from many countries. This type of cultural influence is called "soft power" and plays an important role in diplomacy as well.
Former Ambassador to China Yuji Miyamoto is focusing on the potential of Japan's soft power. Mr. Miyamoto analyzes how the culture and values that Japan has cultivated over many years are perceived in the international community. In particular, Japan's attentive service, politeness, and unique aesthetic sense are highly regarded by people around the world.
Unlike "hard power," such as military or economic strength, soft power is the ability to influence the hearts and minds of others. This power that Japan possesses serves as an important tool for deepening friendly relations with other countries. Deepening understanding of Japan through cultural exchange ultimately leads to strengthening Japan's own international standing.
How Japan should engage with the world in the future will depend on the utilization of its soft power. Due to the development of digital technology, Japan's appeal is now being conveyed to the world faster and more widely than ever before. We need to reaffirm the cultural assets we possess and think about how to share them with the world.
Japan's soft power is not merely a trend, but Japan's identity itself. It is hoped that as more people continue to encounter Japanese culture, new exchanges that transcend borders will be created.
