Upper House Member Muneo Suzuki Meets with PM Takaichi to Discuss Japan-Russia Relations Following President Putin's Visit to Iturup
Liberal Democratic Party Upper House member Muneo Suzuki met with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi at the Prime Minister's Office on the 10th. During the meeting, they exchanged views on the future of Japan-Russia relations following Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to the Northern Territories' island of Iturup.
Regarding the response to President Putin's visit to Iturup, Mr. Suzuki expressed his view that the government's reaction had been "mature." The Northern Territories issue is a critical diplomatic matter for Japan, and it is believed that the meeting covered how to approach future dialogue with Russia and how the Japanese government should respond.
Currently, relations between Japan and Russia remain in a very difficult state, partly due to the influence of the situation in Ukraine. Negotiations for the return of the Northern Territories have also stalled, necessitating careful judgment regarding future diplomatic policy.
Prime Minister Takaichi and Mr. Suzuki shared their thoughts on how Japan should engage with Russia while protecting its national interests amidst a complex international landscape. Attention is now focused on how the outcome of this meeting will influence the Japanese government's future policy toward Russia.
