Taiwanese authorities to continue negotiations on establishing representative office in Papua New Guinea
Taiwan's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Lin Chia-lung, has revealed that negotiations are still ongoing regarding the establishment of a "Taiwan Representative Office" in Papua New Guinea. This is part of Taiwan's broader effort to strengthen its relationships with countries in the Pacific region.
Papua New Guinea is one of the countries that does not have formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan. However, Taiwan aims to build cooperative ties in areas such as the economy, education, and healthcare, and the establishment of a representative office is seen as an important step toward that goal. The representative office would serve a role similar to that of a de facto embassy.
On the other hand, international political circumstances are also heavily involved in this issue. China upholds the "One China" principle and strongly opposes Taiwan having formal diplomatic relations with other countries or establishing such representative offices. Consequently, the negotiations are being conducted with caution.
While Minister Lin did not elaborate on specific progress, he indicated a stance of continuing dialogue with the counterpart country while monitoring the local situation. For Japan, the stability of the Pacific region is also a matter of significant interest, and the future course of these negotiations is being closely watched.
