Shizuoka Prefecture and Boehringer Ingelheim Japan to Collaborate on Chronic Kidney Disease Measures

Shizuoka Prefecture and the pharmaceutical company Boehringer Ingelheim Japan have signed a partnership agreement to strengthen measures against chronic kidney disease (CKD) within the prefecture. This initiative aims to protect the health of residents and reduce the number of patients who will require dialysis in the future.

As of 2022, the number of patients undergoing dialysis in Shizuoka Prefecture has reached approximately 11,000, with over 1,000 new patients starting dialysis each year. Because dialysis treatment places a significant physical and financial burden on patients, early detection and prevention have become critical issues.

Chronic kidney disease often presents almost no subjective symptoms in its early stages. Consequently, there is a problem where many people remain unaware of the disease as it progresses. Through this agreement, both parties will collaborate to conduct awareness-raising activities regarding the disease, aiming to increase opportunities for residents to undergo early testing.

Moving forward, they plan to disseminate accurate knowledge about the prevention of chronic kidney disease while working in cooperation with local medical settings. By having the prefecture and the company work together, it is hoped that a society will be built where more people can live healthy lives.
