About Half of Colorectal Cancer Cases in Japan Linked to 'Gut Bacterial Toxin,' University of Tokyo and Osaka University Study Finds

A research group from the University of Tokyo and Osaka University has announced findings that a "toxin" produced by gut bacteria is deeply involved in approximately half of all colorectal cancer cases in Japan. The study was conducted by analyzing the entire genome of 200 Japanese colorectal cancer patients.

As a result of the analysis, genetic mutations caused by a toxin called "colibactin," which is produced by specific gut bacteria, were found in approximately 48% of the colorectal cancer patients. This toxin has the property of damaging cellular DNA and is considered one of the factors that accelerate the onset and progression of cancer.

Of particular note is the incidence rate among the younger generation aged 40 and under. The survey results showed that approximately 70% of patients aged 40 and under exhibited the effects of this toxin. This suggests that the gut environment may play a very significant role in colorectal cancer among the younger generation.

This research marks an important step in considering prevention and treatment methods for colorectal cancer. Moving forward, expectations are high for the development of new therapeutic drugs that suppress the onset of cancer by controlling gut bacteria, as well as improvements in testing methods for early detection.

Colorectal cancer is one of the diseases on the rise in Japan. This discovery reaffirms the importance of maintaining a healthy diet and gut environment. Experts are urging the public to undergo regular screenings and to pay close attention to their gut health on a daily basis.
