The majority of Germans reject military support for 'Israel': survey

Most Germans today reject their government's military support for 'Israel' in its war on Gaza, according to a new nationwide survey that reveals a significant shift in public opinion. The survey shows widespread dissatisfaction with Berlin's current policy.

The survey commissioned by the Korber Foundation showed that 82% of participants oppose providing military aid to 'Israel', while only 15% support it. A wide majority also wants the government to exert stronger diplomatic pressure on 'Israel'.

The results indicate a deeper change in the perception of Germany's historical obligations. 60% of respondents no longer believe that Germany bears a special responsibility towards 'Israel' due to the Holocaust, which marks a clear departure from a political consensus that has lasted for decades.

The Forsa Institute conducted the survey between September 15 and 26, involving more than 1,500 people. This survey is part of a series of polls that show the widening gap between the government's stance and public opinion regarding the conflict in the Middle East.

Despite its long-standing role as one of the largest arms suppliers to 'Israel', Germany faces increasing criticism. Between October 7, 2023, and June 5, 2025, Berlin approved arms exports worth over 492 million euros. Although Chancellor Friedrich Merz imposed temporary restrictions on new licenses in August under public pressure, these restrictions were lifted this week after the government indicated the stability of the ceasefire and the continuation of humanitarian efforts in Gaza.
