Economic Uncertainty and Mixed Signals on Global Markets
The OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) warns that the global economy is set to slow down. Instead of faster growth, the organisation sees global economic activity decreasing. This is primarily due to the situation in the United States, where growth is less robust than before. This report sets the tone for a day filled with varying economic figures.
Despite this gloomy report on the global economy, European stock markets showed a positive trend around midday. Prices rose after strong economic data from China was released. These positive signals from Asia gave investors in Europe more confidence in international trade on Monday.
In the United States, the situation on the stock market is less clear. Forecasts for the Wall Street opening fluctuated throughout the day between a slightly higher and a slightly lower start. This uncertainty is partly because US retail sales in February rose less sharply than experts had expected. Consumers, therefore, seem to be becoming slightly more cautious with their spending.
Other figures from the US also show a negative trend. Manufacturing activity in the New York region, measured by the Empire State index, declined significantly in March. Additionally, confidence among US homebuilders fell further in March. This points to a difficult period for both production and the housing market in the world's largest economy.
Yet, there are also stable factors to be found in the US economy. Business inventories in the United States rose in January exactly in line with analysts' expectations. Meanwhile, many investors are looking toward safe-haven investments such as gold. The bank UBS expects the gold price to rise further, after it recently reached a record high of more than 3,000 dollars per troy ounce.
Finally, there is much attention on the world of cryptocurrencies. The digital currency Ripple (XRP) is at a crucial point and must choose a clear direction. Analysts are wondering whether a major price increase, also known as a breakout, will occur soon. As a result, the crypto market remains a place of both great opportunities and risks for investors.
