Five Syrians charged with attempted murder after clan attacks in Graz

After a series of violent attacks shook the city of Graz during the Christmas holidays of 2024, the public prosecutor's office filed charges against five young Syrians for attempted murder resulting from a retaliatory conflict between two feuding families that escalated into bloody confrontations in the streets.

The events date back to Christmas Day, when a number of young men met a young man aged eighteen in Dreihackengasse, who was stabbed in the back. Shortly after, another attack occurred in Elisabethinergasse targeting a sixteen-year-old Syrian boy, who was stabbed in the buttocks and threatened with a firearm.

The violence did not stop there, as the confrontations later moved to Ägydigasse Street, where a seventeen-year-old young man sustained minor facial injuries as a result of being assaulted with metal rods and wooden sticks. According to investigations, these assaults occurred in the context of mutual retaliation between the two parties.

The next day, on St. Stephen's Day, the cycle of violence continued, as one of the suspects was injured near the main train station in Graz, necessitating his transfer for treatment at the accident hospital, which contributed to advancing the investigations and revealing broader circumstances surrounding the network of participants in the clashes.

According to what was reported by the Hoyete newspaper in the middle of its report, the attacks were carried out using white weapons, sticks, and iron tools, amid a dangerous escalation that nearly led to fatalities, prompting the public prosecution to file attempted murder charges against the accused, in one of the most serious criminal cases related to clan violence in the city in recent years.

Judicial investigations are still ongoing to accurately determine individual responsibilities, with authorities emphasizing that family or tribal disputes will not be allowed to spill into the public sphere and endanger the population.
