Political tensions explode: Protests disrupt activities at asylum centers in the Netherlands

Five asylum centers in the Netherlands canceled the open days scheduled for Saturday after a week of violent protests. The cancellations included a center in Hoofddorp, two in Amsterdam, as well as two other undisclosed locations. A spokesperson for the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA) confirmed that the decision was made to avoid further disturbances, without revealing details of the potential threats.

The police confirmed that the closure decision was made by the centers themselves. At the same time, other centers across the country have strengthened security measures in response to tensions. Despite these cancellations, 175 facilities welcomed visitors as part of the National Neighbors Day events, which aim to enhance communication between local residents, asylum seekers, and center staff.

These developments came after a series of incidents over the week. On Wednesday, a demonstration to burn the Quran in Hoofddorp turned violent after opposing protesters threw fireworks and stones at the demonstrators and police, resulting in seven arrests. The next day in Doetinchem, seven more people were arrested during a protest against a new asylum center, where protesters raised Dutch flags and chanted anti-immigration slogans.

Acting Prime Minister Dick Shuf condemned the acts of violence, describing them as "unacceptable," and called for protesters to remain calm. Interior Minister Frank Rikart emphasized that municipalities should be able to make decisions about asylum centers "freely, without violence or intimidation."

These disturbances came after a large protest against immigration last weekend at Malieveld in The Hague, where demonstrators clashed with the police, resulting in the arrest of 37 people. Damage was also reported at the Binnenhof building and the D66 party office, raising concerns about escalating tensions over asylum policy in the Netherlands.
