Arrest of a Syrian suspect in terrorism at a refugee center in Dronten
A 33-year-old Syrian man has been arrested at an asylum seekers' center in Dronten on suspicion of planning a terrorist attack. Dutch authorities said he was seeking to obtain a firearm to carry out an act of violence.
The General Intelligence and Security Service (AIVD) reported that the suspect follows a jihadist ideology, but has not yet identified a specific target. Investigators took action after monitoring his intentions and preparations.
The man has been residing in the asylum center since the summer. Authorities describe him as a security risk due to his extremist beliefs and access to weapons.
Since his arrest, he has been placed under restricted preventive detention, allowing him to communicate only with his lawyer. This aims to ensure the integrity of the investigation and protect the public.
Authorities continue to investigate any potential connections or associates linked to the suspect. No further details about the potential attack or additional suspects have been disclosed so far.
