New year and new prices: Vienna residents face significant increases
Life in Vienna will become significantly more expensive in 2026, as the city implements widespread fee increases aimed at stabilizing the budget, which will affect transportation, housing, entertainment, and daily services.
According to the report 'Wien Heute' (Vienna Today), the city aims to raise about 300 million euros by increasing fees due to the difficult financial situation. These increases include administrative fees, costs for connecting sewage and water, road usage, and permits for selling in public places, affecting a wide segment of the population.
Public transport operated by 'Wiener Linien' (Vienna Lines) will see a price increase starting January 1. The cost of the annual subscription will rise to 467 euros, while the price of a single ticket will reach 3.20 euros, and a 31-day ticket will be 75 euros, increasing the daily commuting burden on thousands of passengers.
Pet owners and drivers will also be affected by these increases. The dog tax will rise to 120 euros for the first dog and 160 euros for each additional dog, while the cost of the parking sticker will increase to 13 euros per month, and the hourly parking fee will rise to 3.40 euros. Additionally, the fees for using public spaces known as 'Luftsteuer' (air tax) are set to increase.
Families and companies are not exempt from these measures. Contributions to kindergarten meals will rise, library subscription fees will increase, and wedding parties outside official circles will become significantly more expensive. The increases also include local taxes on overnight stays, fees for sports event tickets, and the costs of operating betting machines.
The city authorities acknowledge that the new fee schedule affects nearly all aspects of daily life. For everyone living in Vienna in 2026, the rise in the cost of living will be unavoidable amid one of the broadest price adjustment packages the city has seen in years.
