ESA launches new Smile mission to explore Earth's magnetic field
On May 19, 2026, an exciting new journey into space began. The European Space Agency (ESA) successfully launched the "Smile" space probe. At 05:52, a Vega-C rocket took off from the European spaceport in Kourou. This mission is an important project to learn more about the relationship between the Earth and the Sun.
The goal of Smile is to investigate Earth's invisible protective shield. This shield protects our planet from the so-called solar wind. These are charged particles coming from the sun that can disrupt technology on Earth. For the first time, scientists want to use special cameras to observe exactly how this protective shield looks in action.
The launch was technically very demanding. The Vega-C rocket first brought the probe into an orbit at an altitude of 700 kilometers. Over the next 25 days, the spacecraft must fire its own engines a total of eleven times to reach its final position. At the same time, ESA is constantly working on new technologies, such as upgrades for the Helix rocket engine, to make future flights even more efficient.
In addition to the current launch, ESA is also already looking to the future. From June 10 to 14, 2026, the organization will participate in the International Aerospace Exhibition (ILA) in Berlin. There, trade visitors and the public can learn more about the latest developments in European space travel and see the technology behind missions like Smile up close.
