Almost No Syrians Return from Austria Despite Regime Change in Damascus

More than a year after the fall of بشار الأسد, very few Syrians living in Austria have returned to their home country, despite political changes in دمشق. Official figures show that returns remain extremely limited.

According to Austria’s Interior Ministry, between December 2024 and January 2026, only 860 Syrians voluntarily returned to Syria. With around 105,000 Syrians currently residing in Austria, this represents just 0.81 percent of the total population.

Forced removals have also been rare. During the same period, slightly more than 100 Syrians were deported. In 2025 alone, 805 people left voluntarily, while 121 were deported, mostly under the Dublin Procedure to other EU countries.

Austria supports voluntary return through financial incentives. Syrians who choose to leave can receive up to 1,000 euros per person in cash, with a maximum of 3,000 euros per family, intended to help with reintegration in Syria. Despite this support, participation remains low.

The low return rate has fueled political debate. The government has announced plans to expand deportations, and Foreign Minister بيت مينل رايزينغر said Austria would take a strict stance toward those without the right to stay. The FPÖ has called for stronger deportations and criticized the granting of asylum to 2,500 additional Syrians in 2025.

Official data confirms that Syrians remain the largest group of asylum seekers in Austria. The change of leadership in Damascus and financial return programs have not significantly altered their behavior, as the overwhelming majority continue to remain in Austria.
