While ministers grant themselves significant salary increases, citizens are expected to cut their spending.

The politician from BSW, Sahra Wagenknecht, strongly criticized the German government for implementing significant salary increases for ministers at a time when citizens are being asked to cut their spending during difficult financial years. She described the situation as a 'mockery' and offered an alternative that could save billions.

After the warning from Finance Minister and leader of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), Lars Klingbeil, on ZDF about the difficult years ahead, Wagenknecht accused the government of unfairly targeting citizens. Klingbeil clarified that significant savings will be necessary, but insisted that the country is not on the brink of collapse and that all groups must contribute.

Faginkst stated that citizens should not bear the burden of cuts to pensions, education, healthcare, or long-term care. Instead, she proposed freezing defense spending at 2021 levels – equivalent to France's nuclear budget – which could save, according to her estimates, 276 billion euros during this legislative period while maintaining national security.

Klingbeil confirmed that the government aims to establish a fair and comprehensive budget package, urging the Social Democratic Party (SPD) to embrace change instead of clinging to the status quo. He did not comment on the details of the Wagenknecht proposal.

The final budget plan will soon be presented by the leaders of the CDU, CSU, and SPD parties. The proposal from Wagenknecht continues to spark controversy over the government's priorities and whether citizens should bear the burden of financial adjustments at a time when ministers are increasing their own salaries.
