Allegations against Spain: EU COVID funds used for pensions?
The Spanish government under Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is currently facing criticism. According to reports from Spanish media, Madrid is said to have used billions from the EU COVID recovery fund for purposes other than those planned. Instead of investing the money in economic recovery after the pandemic, it apparently flowed into the national pension system.
Specifically, it concerns large sums paid into the pension funds for civil servants and the general state pension insurance. These funds were originally provided by the European Union to modernize the economy and cushion the consequences of the COVID crisis. The news is now sparking discussions about transparency in the use of EU funds.
The distribution of EU funds is usually subject to strict conditions. Each member state must demonstrate to the European Commission that the funds are being used for important reforms or ecological projects. Financing current state expenditures, such as pension payments, is not actually among the permitted objectives of the COVID fund.
So far, there has been no official statement from the EU Commission regarding these reports. However, experts point out that such allegations could damage trust between EU member states. Should it be confirmed that the funds were misappropriated, this could have consequences for future payments to Spain.
