Nursing Shortage in Government Hospitals: Ministry of Health Faces Major Challenges
The Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH) is currently facing a serious shortage of nursing staff. Recent reports indicate that since 2023, 1,200 nurses have left the public service, thereby impacting the quality of healthcare delivery in government hospitals.
This problem stems from various factors, including high workloads as well as more attractive job offers in the private sector or abroad. Many nurses choose to resign in search of a better work-life balance.
This significant loss of workforce has forced some wards in government hospitals to operate with limited staff. This situation not only burdens the nurses who remain on duty but can also lead to longer waiting times for patients at clinics and hospitals.
The MOH is currently working to find solutions to address this issue. Among the proposed measures are accelerating the recruitment of new nurses and reviewing service schemes to make them more competitive in order to retain existing talent.
In conclusion, the stability of the national healthcare system is highly dependent on having an adequate nursing workforce. The government hopes that these improvement measures can be implemented immediately to ensure that Malaysians continue to have access to quality and efficient medical treatment.
