Starlink Plans D2D Satellite Technology Trials in Malaysia
Minister of Communications, Fahmi Fadzil, announced that Starlink plans to conduct trials for 'Direct-to-Device' (D2D) technology in Malaysia. This technology allows smartphones to connect directly to satellites without the need for traditional telecommunications towers.
This step is part of the government's efforts to ensure wider internet coverage throughout the country. With D2D technology, rural areas that are difficult to reach via fiber optic cables or telecommunications towers are expected to gain access to more stable internet.
Fahmi explained that the ministry is currently in discussions with Starlink regarding the implementation of these trials. The government wants to ensure that this technology is safe and compatible with Malaysia's current telecommunications infrastructure requirements before it is widely adopted by the public.
In addition to improving connectivity, this satellite technology is also seen as a crucial solution during emergencies or natural disasters. When telecommunications towers are damaged by floods or landslides, satellite services can serve as a lifeline for residents' communication.
For now, the ministry is still awaiting further information from Starlink regarding the trial schedule. The government is committed to continuously monitoring the development of this technology to ensure that Malaysians benefit from global digital advancements.
