Identity Politics Becomes a Threat to National Unity
Selangor Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, recently issued a stern warning regarding the dangers of identity politics in Malaysia. He stated that political practices based excessively on race and religion could undermine the nation's efforts to build stronger unity.
According to Amirudin, identity politics often sows the seeds of suspicion and prejudice among a multiracial society. If this issue is not curbed, it is feared that it will damage the social harmony that has long been nurtured by the Malaysian people.
He emphasized that Malaysia has great aspirations to become a united and progressive nation. However, all these ambitions may fail to be achieved if the people continue to be divided by narrow racial sentiments for the political interests of certain parties.
In conclusion, this statement serves as a call to all parties to be more responsible in their political conduct. The nation's primary focus should be on economic development and the well-being of the people, rather than dividing society to gain political support.
