AI Data Centers Now More Water-Efficient
Artificial intelligence (AI) data centers around the world are reportedly using lower amounts of water for cooling processes. This step was taken following concerns regarding the environmental impact of high water consumption in areas where data centers operate.
According to data from consulting firm Rystad Energy, data centers worldwide consumed 222 billion liters of water throughout 2025. This amount was primarily used to ensure that high-powered computer server systems do not overheat while processing data.
For Malaysia, this development is highly relevant given that our country is currently becoming a growing data center hub in Southeast Asia. Many giant technology companies have chosen Malaysia as a primary investment location, thereby making water resource management an important issue for local authorities.
Technology companies are now shifting to more efficient cooling technologies to reduce reliance on water. These innovations include the use of liquid cooling systems and more advanced water recycling technologies to ensure that data center operations remain sustainable.
Overall, this effort is a positive step in balancing the needs of modern technology with the preservation of natural resources. The industry hopes that continuous innovation will help Malaysia maintain digital economic growth without compromising water supplies for public use.
