Starlink Plans to Test D2D Satellite Technology in Malaysia

Minister of Communications, Fahmi Fadzil, announced that satellite technology company, Starlink, plans to conduct trials for 'Direct-to-Device' (D2D) technology in Malaysia. This initiative aims to improve the quality of telecommunications services in areas with poor internet access.

D2D technology allows standard smartphones to connect directly to satellites without the need for additional equipment. This means users can gain access to the internet or short messaging services even when located in remote areas or locations that lack traditional telecommunication towers.

Fahmi stated that the government is currently reviewing the proposal to ensure it complies with national security and technical regulations. If these trials are successful, it will be a major step in the government's efforts to bridge the digital divide between urban and rural populations.

In addition to improving connectivity, this technology is also seen as an important preparatory measure for emergency situations. For example, satellite services can be used for critical communication purposes in the event of natural disasters such as the major floods that often affect several states in Malaysia.

For now, the ministry is still awaiting further information from Starlink regarding the implementation schedule for the trials. The government hopes this collaboration will provide long-term benefits to Malaysians in enjoying more stable and widespread internet services.
