Asthma and Respiratory Tract Infection Cases Increase Due to Haze
The Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH) has reported a significant increase in asthma and upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) cases nationwide. This situation stems from the deteriorating air quality caused by the haze phenomenon affecting several areas.
According to the latest data from the ministry, cases of upper respiratory tract infections have recorded a surge of 124 percent. This increase indicates that unhealthy air quality has a direct impact on public health, especially for high-risk groups.
Children, the elderly, and individuals with a history of lung disease are the groups most vulnerable to the adverse effects of the haze. Health authorities have warned that continuous exposure to polluted air can worsen existing health conditions.
As a preventive measure, the public is advised to reduce outdoor activities and always wear a face mask when in open areas. Additionally, the community is encouraged to drink plenty of plain water to ensure the body remains hydrated at all times.
MOH will continue to monitor this situation from time to time to ensure that health facilities are prepared for any eventuality. The public is asked to remain alert to official announcements from the authorities regarding air quality in their respective residential areas.
