The Challenge of Agricultural Modernization: Youth Interest in Agri-Technology Remains Low
The country's agricultural sector is currently facing a major challenge in its efforts to modernize the industry. Although the government is actively promoting the use of modern technology in agriculture, the interest of the younger generation in venturing into this field remains at a low level.
A recent study conducted by BusinessToday Malaysia found that the perception of the younger generation towards the agricultural sector has yet to change. Many students and young graduates still view agriculture as a traditional job that is difficult and provides less stable economic returns compared to other sectors.
The study also examined how educational pathways influence students' views on the field of agri-technology. The findings indicate that limited exposure at the school and university levels is the main reason why young people are less interested in making agriculture their career of choice.
To overcome this problem, stakeholders need to find more creative ways to attract the interest of the younger generation. The use of technology such as drones, smart irrigation systems, and artificial intelligence (AI) in agriculture needs to be highlighted as a modern, professional, and high-tech career.
In conclusion, efforts to modernize Malaysia's agricultural sector require cooperation from various parties. If the interest of the younger generation is not increased, the country's goal of achieving food security through modern technology may face difficulties in the future.
