Increase in Organ Donors in Malaysia: 12,575 Patients Still Waiting
The Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH) reported an increase in the number of deceased organ donors for the period of January to August 2026. A total of 102 donation cases were recorded during that period, compared to 89 cases in the same period last year.
Despite the increase in the number of donors, statistics show that the need for organ transplants remains very high in the country. As of now, 12,575 patients are still on the waiting list to receive organs to continue their survival.
The majority of listed patients are waiting for kidney transplants, which is one of the most critical procedures in Malaysia. The consistent shortage of organ donors remains a major challenge for hospitals in assisting patients suffering from chronic organ failure.
The MOH continues to encourage the public to register as organ donors to help those in need. Public awareness regarding the importance of organ donation is considered a crucial step in reducing the burden on waiting lists at hospitals nationwide.
In conclusion, efforts to increase public awareness must be continued so that more Malaysians are willing to make the decision to donate organs. Support from families also plays a vital role in ensuring that the donor's wishes can be carried out after they pass away.
