A taxi driver in Amsterdam is caught working continuously for at least seven weeks.
A taxi driver in Amsterdam was caught working continuously for at least seven weeks without taking a single day off during an inspection at Schiphol Airport. Authorities warn that skipping mandatory weekly rest poses serious safety risks.
The inspection took place on Friday at Luchthaven Schiphol (Schiphol Airport) where the Inspectie Leefomgeving en Transport (Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate, ILT) conducted checks together with the Koninklijke Marechaussee (Royal Marechaussee). Officials specifically reviewed taxi drivers’ working and rest schedules.
According to the ILT, the driver had not taken any weekly rest for at least seven consecutive weeks. Authorities believe the man may have continued working without breaks in order to increase his income, which reportedly ranges between €1,700 and €2,500 per week.
The investigation records reviewed by inspectors date back to January 19, meaning the exact duration of the driver’s continuous work period remains unclear. Officials say it is possible that he had been driving for an even longer period without proper rest.
The ILT emphasized that weekly rest periods are legally required to prevent fatigue behind the wheel and to maintain road safety. The agency described the case as a remarkable record that highlights the risks associated with excessive working hours.
It is still unclear whether the driver will face a fine or if authorities will issue only a warning. The news platform NU.nl has contacted the ILT for further clarification regarding potential penalties.
