From cold to chaos: Austria's weather turns upside down next week

After a brief glimpse of early autumn weather, Austria is preparing for a return of summer temperatures next week. Meteorologists at GeoSphere Austria expect temperatures to exceed 30 degrees Celsius starting mid-week, with a possibility of strong thunderstorms. However, the week will begin with cooler conditions, as temperatures drop to only 4 degrees Celsius on Monday morning, while daytime temperatures reach between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius, with sunny weather interspersed with some temporary clouds.

Tuesday morning will remain cold, with temperatures ranging between 5 and 14 degrees Celsius, but the afternoon will see warmer weather. Temperatures are expected to rise by about three degrees compared to Monday, and most areas of the country will enjoy sunny weather. However, cumulonimbus clouds may form in mountainous areas later, leading to scattered rain, but meteorologists confirm that most areas will remain dry.

By Wednesday, summer will return with full force. Temperatures are expected to reach 30 degrees Celsius in some areas, creating ideal conditions for the first thunderstorms resulting from the heatwave. Although the morning may see light rain showers on the northern slopes of the Alps, the afternoon will witness the formation of thunderclouds over the mountains, especially south of the main Alpine ridge. The rest of the country will enjoy a sunny and summery day.

Thursday will be the most volatile day of the week. Temperatures will range between 26 and 33 degrees Celsius, except in the west and southwest, where continuous rain will lower temperatures to between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius only. Meteorologists warn of the possibility of heavy rain in areas such as Silvretta and the Carnic Alps. The rest of the regions will start their day with sunny weather, but clouds will gradually increase. By evening, strong thunderstorms are expected in the northern Alps foothills as well as in the Mühlviertel and Waldviertel regions.

In contrast, the regions of eastern and southeastern Austria will escape most of these weather fluctuations. It is expected that these areas will remain dry and sunny throughout Thursday, providing a brief period of stable weather away from the violent mix of heat and storms that will cover the rest of the country.
