A serious scam targeting millions of PayPal users – how to protect yourself
Millions of PayPal users are facing a new phishing scam aimed at stealing personal and financial data. Consumer protection agencies warn that these fake messages are designed to provoke anxiety and push victims to act quickly.
According to the warning, scammers are sending emails claiming that the PayPal account has been temporarily restricted due to an alleged security check. The message asks users to confirm their account details to regain access, often bearing a subject line like 'Urgent Account Verification Required.'
These messages appear professional and well-organized, but they lack real explanations. Some of the most prominent signs of fraud include: an impersonal greeting like 'Dear User', a suspicious sender address, and links within the message that lead to fake sites aimed at stealing passwords and account data.
Experts strongly advise completely ignoring these messages and moving them to the spam folder without responding to them. If the user has any doubts about their account, they should go directly to the official website or the PayPal app to check for any real notifications.
PayPal has millions of users worldwide, and it is particularly popular in Germany, making a huge number of people potential targets. Scammers use automated systems to randomly generate email addresses and phone numbers, meaning anyone could be targeted—even without visiting dangerous sites.
The basic rule is clear: do not click on links and do not enter any personal information. As long as you do not interact with the message, nothing will happen. These phishing waves often appear every few months and then stop when the messages are ignored or reported, which helps devices later to automatically block future attempts.
