Major shortage of technical personnel in the Southern Netherlands
Companies in the Southern Netherlands are finding it very difficult to find suitable technical personnel. The demand for skilled workers, such as mechanics, welders, and installers, has risen sharply in recent years. As a result, many companies are unable to complete their orders on time, which is hindering the growth of the regional economy.
The cause of this shortage is a combination of factors. On one hand, many experienced professionals are retiring, while on the other, too few young people are choosing a technical education. In addition, the technical sector is in a state of flux due to the energy transition and digitalization, which requires an increasing amount of specialized knowledge.
To solve this problem, educational institutions and the business community are working more closely together. More internship positions are being offered, and there are special retraining programs for people who want to switch to the technical sector from a different field. There is also a greater focus on making technical professions more attractive to women and career changers.
Despite these initiatives, the situation remains challenging for the time being. Employers in the region are calling on the government to invest more in technical education and to improve the image of technical professions. It is crucial that more skilled workers are added in the short term to be able to realize ambitions in the areas of housing construction and sustainability.
