Netherlands extends restrictions on the use of steel slag
The Dutch government has decided to extend the current restrictions on the use of steel slag by six months. This measure will remain in effect at least until January 23 of next year.
Steel slag is a byproduct of the steel industry and is often used in construction, for example in road building or in the foundations of buildings. However, there is debate regarding the safety of this material for the environment and public health.
The reason for this extension is an ongoing study by the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM). The government wants to wait for the results of this study before making final decisions about the future use of the material.
Until the study is completed, a precautionary measure is in place. This means that companies must exercise caution for the time being regarding where they apply steel slag, in order to prevent potential risks to the soil and groundwater.
The cabinet hopes that this extra time will allow it to form a clear and scientifically sound policy. As soon as the RIVM presents the results, the government will determine whether the rules for the use of steel slag can be relaxed or if stricter requirements are necessary.
