Man shot dead on busy terrace in Amsterdam-Noord, suspect held
A man was shot dead on a busy café terrace on the NDSM quay in Amsterdam-Noord on Friday afternoon. Police received the report shortly after 3 pm. The victim was resuscitated but died at the scene. A suspect was arrested on the quay.
According to police, there was an argument between the victim and the suspect before the shooting. A witness told Het Parool the argument started over a dog that was running loose. Divers later found a firearm in the IJ. Police are not currently looking for other suspects.
The Custodial Institutions Agency (DJI) confirmed that the victim worked at the Justitieel Complex Zaanstad prison. It is not known whether the victim and the suspect knew each other, or whether that played a role.
The quay was crowded because of the sunny weather, and many people, including children, saw the shooting. Witnesses were taken to the police station by bus. The ferry landing at the NDSM wharf was temporarily moved to the Distelweg, and by around 6.30 pm two of the three landing points had reopened.
