Healthcare institution Omring deploys artificial intelligence to reduce workload
Healthcare institution Omring is experimenting on a large scale with artificial intelligence (AI) to reduce the workload for nurses and caregivers. By delegating administrative tasks to smart software, they hope that healthcare workers will have more time left for personal contact with clients. This project is one of many initiatives in the Netherlands to address the growing staff shortages in the healthcare sector.
The use of AI is initially focused on automating reporting and scheduling. Previously, maintaining patient records took up a lot of valuable time, but new programs can now summarize conversations or prepare reports. As a result, staff spend less time behind the computer and can better focus on their daily care tasks.
Although the technology offers many benefits, Omring emphasizes that the human touch remains central. The AI acts as a supporting 'colleague' that helps with preparatory work, but the final decisions regarding care always remain in the hands of the professionals themselves. There is a great deal of attention paid to client privacy and the careful handling of sensitive medical data.
The results of this project are being closely monitored by other healthcare institutions in the country. If the use of AI proves successful, it could be an important solution for the challenges that Dutch healthcare faces in the coming years. The goal is to maintain the quality of care while simultaneously making the work more attractive and less burdensome for healthcare staff.
