Global virtual reality market shows sharp decline
The global market for XR technology, including virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), has experienced a significant contraction over the past year. According to a new report from research firm Omdia, sales of equipment for these technologies have fallen sharply. This is a notable development, given that the sector had been counting on significant growth in recent years.
The decline is attributed by experts to several factors. Consumers appear to be more cautious with their spending due to the rising cost of living. In addition, there is a lack of new, innovative applications that convince the average user to purchase an expensive VR headset. Many people still find the devices too heavy or uncomfortable for long-term use.
This trend also has consequences for the Dutch market. Many Dutch companies focusing on innovation and software development for VR are noticing that demand from both the business and consumer markets is decreasing. Where previously there was significant investment in virtual meeting spaces and training programs, there is now a more critical look at the return on these investments.
Despite the current contraction, some experts remain positive about the long-term future. They expect the technology to recover once lighter and cheaper devices hit the market. For now, however, the sector remains in a phase of reflection, with companies needing to adapt their strategies to the changing needs of the market.
