Senate blocks plan for faster increase of the retirement age
The Senate has blocked an important plan of the Jetten I cabinet. The cabinet wanted the retirement age, also known as the state pension (AOW) age, to rise faster than previously agreed. Due to this decision by the Senate, the government's proposal will definitely not go ahead.
The state pension age is the age at which people in the Netherlands stop working and receive a basic income from the state. Currently, this age is rising gradually because the average life expectancy of the population is increasing. The cabinet wanted to accelerate this increase to keep public finances healthy in the long term.
However, many parties in the Senate had significant doubts about the plan. They are particularly concerned about people in physically demanding professions, such as construction or healthcare. For these workers, it is often physically impossible to continue working even longer. Additionally, critics felt that citizens were given too little time to prepare for the new situation.
Because the Senate rejected the plan, the current rules will remain in force for the time being. The cabinet must now look for other ways to cover the costs of the aging population. For now, Dutch workers know where they stand regarding their retirement date.
