Senate blocks faster increase of state pension age
The Senate has made an important decision regarding Dutch pensions. The plan by the Jetten I cabinet to increase the state pension (AOW) age more rapidly has been rejected by the Senate. This means that the current plans for pension accrual will not be adjusted for the time being as the cabinet had intended.
The cabinet wanted to accelerate the increase in the age at which people are entitled to a state pension (AOW). According to the government, this was necessary to keep the pension system affordable for all Dutch citizens in the future. However, there was significant criticism of this proposal from various political parties in the Senate.
Opponents in the Senate felt that the proposed increase would happen too quickly. They were concerned about the consequences for employees who perform physically demanding work or who have already planned their retirement age. Due to the rejection, the current schedule for the AOW age remains in effect for the time being.
The Senate's decision provides clarity for millions of workers in the Netherlands. The cabinet will now have to re-examine its plans for pensions. It is not yet known whether a new proposal to adjust the pension age will be introduced in the short term.
