Senate blocks faster increase of state pension age
The Senate has put a stop to the Jetten I cabinet's plan to increase the state pension (AOW) age more rapidly. Consequently, the proposal to accelerate the rise in the retirement age cannot proceed. This decision has major implications for the current government's plans.
The cabinet wanted to increase the state pension age more quickly to keep public finances stable in the long term. According to the planners, this measure was necessary due to the aging population in the Netherlands. However, the Senate did not agree to this proposal.
Opponents in the Senate expressed concerns about the consequences for workers who have been relying on the current schedule for years. They believe that people should have certainty regarding their retirement date and that a rapid change causes too much unrest. There was also criticism regarding the way the cabinet had calculated the increase.
With the rejection of this proposal, the current regulations for the state pension age remain in effect for the time being. The cabinet must now return to the drawing board to see if there are other ways to manage pension costs. It is not yet clear whether the cabinet will come forward with an amended proposal.
