Senate blocks faster increase of state pension age

The Senate has taken an important decision regarding Dutch pensions. The senators have rejected the Jetten I cabinet's plan to increase the state pension age (AOW) faster than originally planned.

The cabinet wanted to accelerate the rise in the retirement age to keep public finances healthy in the long term. Under the government's plans, people would have had to work longer before becoming eligible for their state pension.

The Senate, however, did not agree to this proposal. During the vote, it became clear that there was insufficient support for the measure. Critics in the Senate felt that the proposed change would have too great an impact on the current generation of workers.

Due to this decision, the current schedule for the increase in the state pension age remains in effect for the time being. This means that, for now, nothing will change regarding the age at which Dutch citizens can retire.

The cabinet must now determine how to proceed with pension policy. It is still unclear whether the government will come forward with a new proposal or if it will look for other ways to manage pension costs in the future.
