Major shortage of skilled professionals in the Dutch technical sector
Although more and more plumbing companies are being established in the Netherlands, finding technical personnel remains a major challenge. At present, there are approximately 30,000 vacancies in the technical sector. This shortage is causing long waiting times for consumers who need help with repairs or installations at home.
The cause of this problem is twofold. On one hand, there is a high demand for skilled professionals due to the growth in construction and the making of homes more sustainable. On the other hand, the aging population plays a significant role. Many experienced plumbers and technicians will soon reach retirement age and leave the labor market.
The departure of these professionals means that a great deal of knowledge and experience is being lost. Because there are not enough new people entering the field to fill these positions, a structural staff shortage is emerging. Companies are trying to recruit new employees, but competition in the labor market is very high.
The situation has direct consequences for Dutch society. For homeowners, it means they often have to wait weeks or even months for an appointment with a plumber. This is also a bottleneck for the energy transition, as there are simply not enough technicians to install heat pumps, for example.
It is currently unclear how this shortage can be resolved in the short term. Experts emphasize that making technical professions more attractive to young people is essential to keep the sector healthy in the future.
