Secrecy surrounding electricity consumption of data centers in the Netherlands
Most data centers in the Netherlands keep their exact electricity consumption a secret from the general public. Although these companies do report their consumption data to the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO), these figures are not made public.
The reason for this secrecy is that the data is considered 'commercially sensitive.' This means that the data centers fear that competitors could glean information about their business operations if the figures were accessible to everyone.
This raises questions about the transparency of the sector. Data centers consume large amounts of electricity in the Netherlands, which is an important topic in the discussion regarding the Dutch energy grid. Because the demand for power continues to grow, there is a great need for clarity regarding who the largest consumers are.
For the time being, the electricity consumption of individual data centers will therefore remain behind closed doors. It is not yet known whether the government will introduce stricter rules in the future to make this information publicly accessible.
