Northern Netherlands wants more successful companies: NOM intervenes
In the Northern Netherlands, young companies, also known as start-ups, are finding it difficult to grow into larger enterprises. Recent figures show that only 9.6 percent of these start-ups grow into successful 'scale-ups.' This percentage is significantly lower than in the rest of the Netherlands, which is a cause for concern among regional economic experts.
The NOM (Investment and Development Agency for the Northern Netherlands) has announced it will intervene to reverse this trend. The organization sees great potential in the region, but notes that entrepreneurs often run into barriers. These primarily involve a lack of capital, guidance, and access to the right networks necessary for the next phase of growth.
To stimulate growth, the NOM is going to set up new programs. These initiatives are intended to help entrepreneurs professionalize their business operations and strengthen their market position. By offering more support, the organization hopes that start-ups in Groningen, Friesland, and Drenthe will be able to make the leap to becoming mature enterprises more often.
Economic growth in the North depends on a healthy business climate. When more start-ups become successful, it creates new employment and innovation in the region. The coming period will show whether the NOM's additional efforts are sufficient to structurally increase the number of scale-ups in the Northern Netherlands.
