Doctor from Veldhoven receives low fine after illegal medical treatments
A doctor from Veldhoven has become embroiled in controversy after it emerged that he offered hundreds of patients an illegal and experimental treatment. The doctor used umbilical cord blood for this purpose, a method that is not permitted in the Netherlands. In total, approximately two hundred people made use of this medical care.
The case is causing a stir due to the high costs the doctor charged. Patients paid as much as 44,000 euros per session for the treatment. Many people who were hoping for a medical solution to their health problems paid large sums of money for this unproven therapy.
Although the amounts the doctor earned were enormous, the final penalty is remarkably low. The disciplinary tribunal has imposed a fine of 9,000 euros on the doctor. This ruling is raising many questions among the public and medical experts, as the fine stands in stark contrast to the profit the doctor made from the illegal practices.
The Health and Youth Care Inspectorate strictly monitors such practices to ensure patient safety. It is prohibited in the Netherlands to perform experimental treatments without the proper permits and scientific justification. The case in Veldhoven is now being used as a warning to both doctors and patients about the dangers of unrecognized medical care.
