Amsterdam wants to become less dependent on American tech companies
The municipality of Amsterdam has made a striking decision: the city wants to gradually stop using software from large American tech companies. The goal is to become more independent and to better protect the digital security of the city and its residents.
At present, many Dutch government institutions are still heavily dependent on American companies such as Microsoft, Google, and Amazon. These companies provide the software necessary for daily operations, such as emailing and storing files. The municipality of Amsterdam considers this a risk and therefore wants to look for alternatives that offer more privacy.
Replacing this software, however, is a major challenge. The systems of large tech companies are deeply intertwined with government work processes. Switching to other software not only takes a lot of time, but also requires employees to learn how to use new programs. Furthermore, the new software must meet strict security requirements.
Despite the difficulties, Amsterdam is pushing ahead with the plan. The city hopes that other municipalities in the Netherlands will follow this example. By working together on digital independence, the government wants to become less dependent on foreign influences and regain control over its own data.
