Joran van der Sloot reports threats in Peruvian prison
Joran van der Sloot, the Dutchman imprisoned in Peru for murder, has stated that he is being threatened in prison. The 36-year-old man is currently serving a long prison sentence for the 2010 murder of the Peruvian Stephany Flores.
According to his lawyer, Van der Sloot's safety is at risk. He is reportedly facing intimidation by other inmates at the prison in the city of Challapalca. Van der Sloot has therefore requested additional protection from the Peruvian authorities.
Last year, Van der Sloot was temporarily transferred from Peru to the United States. There, he had to stand trial for the extortion of the family of Natalee Holloway, the American teenager who disappeared in Aruba in 2005. After that trial, he was returned to Peru to serve out his sentence there.
The situation surrounding Van der Sloot has drawn global attention for nearly twenty years. He remains a well-known name in both the Netherlands and the United States due to his involvement in several serious criminal cases. The Dutch government is monitoring the situation but has limited options to intervene in the Peruvian legal system.
It is currently unclear whether the Peruvian prison administration will take measures to ensure the safety of the Dutchman. The authorities in Peru have not yet officially responded to the reports regarding the threats.
