Dutch people hand in over 7,600 kilos of fireworks during national campaign
The Dutch have handed in a total of 7,650 kilograms of fireworks during the first national collection campaign. The initiative was intended to remove dangerous and illegal fireworks from residential areas. The campaign took place at various locations across the country, where citizens could safely drop off their stock at special collection points.
The government and the police are satisfied with the result of the campaign. By handing in the fireworks, the authorities hope to significantly reduce the number of accidents during the New Year's Eve celebrations. Fireworks accidents cause a great deal of damage and injury every year, and by taking this amount out of circulation now, public safety is increased.
The fireworks handed in consisted of a mix of legal consumer fireworks and heavier, illegal variants. Experts emphasize that storing fireworks in homes is very risky, especially when it concerns outdated or prohibited products. The collected stock is now being destroyed in a safe manner by professional companies.
The authorities are considering organizing such collection moments more often in the future. The success of this first edition shows that many people are willing to hand in their unused fireworks in a responsible manner. With this campaign, the Netherlands hopes to make the upcoming New Year's Eve a lot safer for everyone.
