RIVM warns: disinformation is a major threat to public health
The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) is warning of new, major threats to public health in the Netherlands. According to experts, disinformation and declining international cooperation in particular pose a serious risk to the health of the population.
Disinformation, or the spreading of incorrect information, makes it more difficult for the government and healthcare institutions to provide reliable advice. When people doubt scientific facts, this can lead to lower vaccination rates or the ignoring of important health measures. This puts not only the individual at risk, but society as a whole.
In addition, the RIVM points to the increasing pressure on international cooperation. Diseases do not respect national borders, and it is therefore essential that countries share information and resources with one another. When countries cooperate less effectively, it becomes harder to combat new health crises or pandemics effectively.
The RIVM emphasizes that strong and reliable communication is necessary to maintain the trust of citizens. International agreements must also be strengthened to better protect public health in the future. These developments are being closely monitored by experts.
