Netherlands extends restrictions on the use of steel slag
The Dutch government has decided to extend the current restrictions on the use of steel slag by six months. This measure will remain in effect at least until January 23 of next year. Steel slag is a byproduct of the steel industry that is often reused in road construction and other infrastructure projects.
The decision to extend the pause was made pending a comprehensive study by the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM). The government wants to gain more clarity regarding the safety and potential environmental effects of the material before its use is fully permitted again.
There has been recent debate over whether substances from steel slag can leach into the soil or groundwater. The RIVM is currently investigating whether the material is safe for humans and the environment in various applications. Until the results of this study are known, a precautionary measure applies to new projects.
The construction sector and other involved parties must take this extension into account when planning their operations. The government emphasizes that protecting public health and environmental quality is the highest priority in this decision at this time.
