Dutch government working on its own secure cloud environment
The Dutch government has begun designing its own 'sovereign cloud'. This is a special digital environment in which the government retains control over sensitive data itself. The goal is to become less dependent on large foreign technology companies and to better protect the privacy of citizens.
Currently, many government agencies use cloud services from international companies. This entails risks, as data is sometimes stored on servers abroad. With its own cloud, the government wants to ensure that all information remains within Dutch borders and complies with strict European privacy regulations.
The design for this cloud environment is still in the initial phase. The government is investigating how it can use data centers that are Dutch-owned and managed by Dutch parties. This will give the government full control over the security and management of the digital infrastructure.
The transition to its own cloud is an important step for the digital security of the Netherlands. The project is intended to ensure that the government is better protected against digital threats in the future and that the data of residents is stored securely in a reliable, national environment.
