North Brabant invests 150 million euros in new care housing
The province of North Brabant is taking a unique decision to address the housing shortage in the care sector. As the first government body in the Netherlands, the province is investing 150 million euros directly into a special care real estate fund. This initiative is intended to provide more suitable living space for people in need of care.
With this investment, North Brabant aims to enable the construction of 400 to 500 new residential units. The fund focuses on locations where housing and care are combined. By making this money available, the province hopes that projects that were previously too expensive or too complex will now get off the ground.
There is a major shortage of suitable housing for the elderly and people with disabilities in the Netherlands. It is often difficult for care institutions to secure financing for new buildings. The province of North Brabant therefore sees itself as an important partner in accelerating this process and easing the pressure on the care market.
The plans are a first for the Dutch government. Other provinces and municipalities are watching this project with great interest. If the investment proves successful, this model could be used more often in the future to solve social problems in housing construction.
In the coming period, it will become clear exactly where the new care homes will be built. With this step, North Brabant is setting an important tone in the discussion about how the government can contribute more actively to the availability of care real estate.
