31-degree heat & World Cup celebrations in major cities
Prepare for a hot weekend with tropical temperatures in large parts of the country. While the summer holidays are starting in the south, a victory for Morocco over the Netherlands led to busy festivities in several cities, and the cabinet is presenting new plans for digital security.
This weekend, the mercury will rise to 29 to 31 degrees in the south and center of the Netherlands. The heat is caused by a wind from the northeast and east. For the Southern region, this coincides with the start of the summer holidays, although possible showers should also be taken into account later in the weekend.
The warm night already led to busy streets in various cities following Morocco's win over the Netherlands during the football World Cup. In Utrecht and the Amsterdam district of Nieuw-West, supporters celebrated early this morning with plenty of honking and fireworks. Many people gathered particularly at the well-known meeting spot 'De Stier' in Utrecht to celebrate the victory.
Alongside these current events, the government is working on long-term security with a new AI strategy. The cabinet wants to deploy artificial intelligence (AI) — smart computer systems that can perform tasks independently — more actively. The goal is to strengthen cyber resilience and innovation within defense against digital threats.
