Formula 1 and other top sports move to Videoland
There is a major change coming for sports enthusiasts in the Netherlands. Videoland has acquired the Dutch sports rights from Viaplay for an amount of approximately 142 million euros. This means that popular sports, such as Formula 1, will be available in a different place in the future. For many fans, this is a significant shift.
Videoland is the well-known streaming service of RTL Nederland, which is currently being acquired by DPG Media. By purchasing these rights, the service aims to attract more subscribers. Previously, sports fans needed a separate subscription to Viaplay to follow, for example, Max Verstappen's races. Now, this popular sport is coming to a platform that many Dutch people already use for movies and series.
The takeover is seen as a major step in the Dutch media world. Viaplay held the exclusive rights in recent years, but Videoland is now taking them over. In addition to Formula 1, it likely also concerns other sports that Viaplay previously broadcast. Think of darts and international football. It is a strategic choice by Videoland to now also offer live top-tier sports.
There are still some questions for viewers. For instance, the exact date on which all sports will officially transition to Videoland is not yet known. The prices for the new sports subscriptions have also not yet been announced. It is expected that Videoland will provide more information about this to consumers soon.
This change demonstrates how important sports rights are for streaming services in the battle for the viewer. With the arrival of Formula 1 on Videoland, the landscape for the Dutch sports fan is changing significantly. For now, enthusiasts can look forward to a new season full of action on a platform familiar to them.
