Norway wants to ban smart glasses in public spaces
The Norwegian government is investigating whether the use of so-called 'peeping glasses' in busy public spaces can be banned. These smart glasses, which are equipped with built-in cameras, make it possible to take photos and videos of others unnoticed. The authorities are very concerned about the privacy of citizens.
According to the Norwegian Minister of Justice, the current right to privacy is at stake. Because the cameras in the glasses are often very small, bystanders do not know when they are being filmed. This can lead to uncomfortable situations and violations of personal privacy in public areas such as shopping streets, train stations, and parks.
Although the proposal comes from Norway, the discussion is also being closely followed in other European countries. In the Netherlands, too, there is growing attention for new technologies that can violate privacy. Experts point out that legislation often lags behind the rapid development of this type of wearable equipment.
The cabinet in Oslo now wants to come up with concrete rules as soon as possible. The goal is not to ban the technology itself, but to restrict its use in situations where people expect not to be filmed. It is not yet known when a final decision on the ban will be made.
