OLVG starts trial for late-term abortions
The OLVG hospital in Amsterdam has started a trial for performing late-term abortions. This concerns pregnancy terminations between the 22nd and 24th week. Although this medical procedure is legally permitted within this timeframe in the Netherlands, it remains a sensitive subject in society.
Until recently, it was often difficult for women in this specific situation to receive help in the Netherlands. Many hospitals did not perform these procedures, sometimes forcing women to travel abroad for medical assistance. With this new trial, the hospital aims to improve care for these patients and offer it closer to home.
The decision to terminate a pregnancy at this stage is often very profound for those involved. The hospital emphasizes that a careful medical and ethical assessment is made for every request. Furthermore, intensive support is available for the women and their partners throughout this process.
The medical sector and politicians are closely monitoring the trial at the OLVG. The goal is to investigate whether this care can be responsibly integrated into the Dutch healthcare system. The outcomes of this process will determine whether other hospitals might also offer this specific care in the future.
